Just in case some readers are not familiar with the basic accounting equation, profit or loss of a business is equal to income minus costs and expenses. Salaries, wages and superannuation, office rental, utilities, etc are costs and expenses, and since with less people around, the costs and expenses will be drastically cut. The profit will increase even if the income remains unchanged.

Are these CEO’s that smart to come out with these strategies? No, many just spend company’s money to engage consultants to plot against their own people! If part of the CEO’s reward is based on performance, this is the simplest way to make more profit without increasing sales!

How can these people go to bed with a clear conscience every night?

He does not play a game, make a loss and yet gets $1.8 million, just like many CEO's in many Australian companies.

Apathetic Australians in power or in control make this happen. A person with good character does not necessarily make a good business operator or leader.

Mrs Field who makes cookies can tell you that as business grows, you need more than just operation staff. A next layer is needed to oversee the staff, and coordinate the operation. This level is the management. Unfortunately, management demands higher pay than ordinary operation staff, and therefore the cost goes up disproportionately. When more people are employed, there will be more sticky IR and OHS issues; new specialist personnel who also command higher pay are engaged.

Oops, I forget the rostering, IT, posh offices, flashy furniture, corporate image, functions, advertisement and promotion, PR, Board members, CEO perks, etc.

Budget airline can afford budget airline fare no longer.

Tolerance has a limit! Every day we read or listen to the news that many bureaucrats, CEO's & sports players are earning mega bucks and yet ordinary Australians are tightening their belts and even losing their jobs.

Some top earners are hopeless, useless and heartless to say the least, making losses or cutting staff year after year. Are Australians too naive and too apathetic to allow this to go on unchecked?

We may not have any experience about revolution, except the Eureka Stockade; but many migrants had lived through and even participated in revolutions before they came to Australia. If wealth gaps get bigger and inequality continues to propagate, street marches and noisy demonstrations will become daily activities.

I hope I never see the day when Australia goes down that path. However, the world is getting too “small” and information can be disseminated at lightning speed. What we have been witnessing in many countries recently are precursor of what can happen in Australia if nothing is done to correct imbalance sooner.
