Unfortunately too much emphasis is placed on paper qualification and paper shuffling. It's nice to sit in front of a computer, fill in forms, prepare reports or talk about strategies; the crux of the matter is patients lie in beds and need attention; they do not hang around the office areas.

It is true that many agency staff are not familiar with particular hospital environment, including certain crucial equipment, and lack spoken language skill.

Facts and figures, and who has done what are of no interest to the patients. Real throughput can only be achieved by real patient care, not the bright red colour at the bottom line.

Self-cleaning toilets have not been invented yet

There are no dirty hospitals. There are only dirty patients or visitors and users with no civic consciousness. Did the person who vomited in the men's toilet inform any staff after the incident? Did anyone using the toilet after the person had vomited inform any staff about the condition of the toilet? To all the whingers, do not be apathetic and indifferent. Self-cleaning toilets have not been invented yet!

If people are well enough to complain about the meals, they should be discharged from the hospital and not occupying the valuable beds. Not all hospitals serve foods as bad as described; furthermore, hospitals are not restaurants, and most people don't dine like the upper-crust with the luxury of ordering from a-la carte menu at exorbitant prices.

There are so many constraints regarding allergy, variation of texture, availability of seasonal foods at reasonable cost, staff absenteeism resulting in meals staying in equipment longer which can change the appearance of the food.

Most foods in hospitals are more nutritious than the unhealthy foods consumed by discharged patients. The fact that these people appear to be malnourish is that they lost all the kilos of the yucky fat they had been carrying while they were staying in the hospitals.

I wish Julia Gillard stop lecturing the Chinese about human rights, treatment to minority groups and religious freedom.

What is happening in Australia is just the exact opposite. Excessive human rights to law breakers, special privileges to queue jumpers / hooligans on the roof, and in the name of religious freedom, we spend mega-bucks to refurbish public hospitals for the religious minorities and feeding them with special meals.

Desalination plant and Myki ticketing system are two well known debacles. Don't think that's the end.

Problems related to hospitals are bigger than Ben Hur! Olivia Newton-John has lost a Victorian government guarantee for funding of her new cancer and welfare centre at Austin Hospital, Royal Children Hospital requires $24 million for software, some new hospitals consist of buildings with walls but without beds, some with beds but without kitchen!

Deals must be broken. Ted Baillieu has a tough job ahead, not only on health reform, but also on hospital culture reform.

There are wards in some hospitals not open, tying up many beds. There are no doctors and nursing staff to service them due to lack of funding. If remains status quo, these wards will never be opened.

When Brumby opened "additional" new beds in hospitals, old beds were shut down, and the staff were reshuffled. In fact, there were hardly additional beds opened during election time.

New wings or buildings of hospitals were not well thought out and lack accommodation. In addition, some hospitals placed unnecessary emphasis on certain racial needs, wasting valuable funding resource.

Like many public services, unused monies before end of financial years are squandered on unnecessary renovation or replacement of furniture.

Former shadow health minister did not want to know many of things mentioned above before. I hope Ted Baillieu will look into these matters with the greatest urgency, before promising any more new hospitals or additional new beds!
